Preparing for Knee Arthroscopy: Step-by-Step Checklist
Following these guidelines minimizes the risks of complications and accelerates the postoperative tissue regeneration process.
1. Medical Examination (7-10 days prior)
- Blood Tests: CBC with differential, biochemistry, coagulation profile (PT, aPTT), blood group, and Rh factor.
- Infection Screening: Tests for HIV, Syphilis, Hepatitis B and C.
- Imaging/Diagnostic: ECG with interpretation and a recent MRI of the knee (1.5 Tesla).
- Clearance: Physician's (internist's) approval for surgery.
2. The Night Before Surgery
- Fast Rules: Do not eat or drink 8 hours before surgery (strictly NPO - nothing by mouth).
- Hygiene: Take a shower; do not shave the surgical site yourself to avoid micro-cuts and skin irritation.
- Medications: Consult your surgeon regarding the discontinuation of anticoagulants or blood-thinning drugs.
3. What to Bring to the Clinic
- Brace or Immobilizer: Rigid fixation as recommended by your surgeon.
- Crutches: Axillary or forearm crutches to offload the operated joint.
- Compression Stockings: Class 1 or 2 compression stockings for DVT prevention.
- Documents: ID, all laboratory results, and the MRI disc/reports.
Important: If you experience symptoms of a viral infection, cold sores, or skin rashes near the knee - contact your surgeon immediately.
